One of my favourite poems ever is by Yeats and it contains the line ‘…of night and light and the half light’ and it has resonated with me ever since.
There’s something so measured about Cloths of Heaven and that’s how it’s able to be so powerful in so very few words.
And with its lack of fullstops it becomes almost breathless. It is indolent and it rolls like waves on the sea. There’s a subtlety that speaks of lovers lips and a breath that lingers the words onto bare skin, triggering tiny hairs.
It’s a poem that feels dusky.
This is what I love about playing with light. With the right light you can isolate a puddle of detail. You can make the rest fall into blackness. Into silence, whist I - we - savour just a tiny fraction and give it our all.

I still don’t know how to describe what I do.
“Fine art wedding photographer” sounds like I’m trying too hard. “Documentary” sounds like I’m making a film about it. “Editorial” sounds like it belongs in a magazine and not in a field in Cornwall at dusk.
I’ve been doing this long enough that I should have an answer by now. A tidy sentence I can hand out at dinner parties or put in an email signature.
But every time I try to write one down, it sounds like someone else wrote it. Not me.
What I can tell you is the feeling. The one where the light goes soft and the air goes still and the whole day feels like it’s happening in a film you’ll replay for years. I chase that. I don’t always catch it. But when I do, I press the shutter and I hold my breath and I know, for a second, that this is it. This is the thing I couldn’t describe.
Maybe that’s the answer. Not the words. The pictures.
