It’s faintly crazy.
No – it’s BEYOND crazy.
Never before have we collectively taken so many images, nor have they even been disseminated so freely before (because you TOTALLY needed to see what I have for breakfast, right?) and yet far far fewer images are ever printed.
Now digital is great. But it’s not really permanent. And in its own way, it’s not really real.
Digital is amazing for sharing highlights with people with which it would be hard to show in the flesh. But there’s an undeniable difference between seeing stuff on a screen and curling up with a book of images. I guess it’s a bit like Kindle vs print (#books4eva!). Touch builds connection. And print oddly affords us more of that luxurious sense of time. That we’re taking time out of the busy-busy. That we’re stopping everything to look at **THIS**. That it cuts through the digital jibber jabber of our online lives. And we pause. And we reflect. We recharge a little. And we feel that little bit less transient.
Also available is the lovely lovely BloomBook (and I’m going to quote verbatim from the bindery’s website here) ‘BloomBook is an eco-oriented lay flat photo paper book. By using remnants of RAW linen from the main production and a very nice wood salvaged from the nearby timber mill, we managed to create a beautiful and professional product while keeping the price low.’ Couldn’t have put it more succinctly myself.
